ED2013 4/5 Reviews ED2013 Theatre Reviews
The GB Project (Kate Craddock in association with Northern Stage)
By Natalia Equihua | Published on Friday 30 August 2013
With a blackboard, two microphones and only one actress on stage, one cannot help feeling this will be a lecture about Gertrude Bell rather than a play. The first few minutes devoted to an overwhelming amount of facts, dates, and names make it clear that actress Kate Craddock is obsessed with this unrecognised British heroine. However, what it turns out to be is a fascinating reflection upon the words and power of women from Bell to Margaret Thatcher to Hillary Clinton. Craddock successfully deconstructs the notion of a national hero and looks at Bell’s achievements from every perspective. It is an enlightening piece of narrative history delivered with such passion that you won’t regret any minute spent inside that theatre.
Northern Stage at St Stephen’s, until 24 Aug (not 18, 19), 11.30am.
