War Of The Waleses (Asterion Theatre)

This show is perhaps what the Private Eye offices would produce if they had an amateur dramatics society, so intent are the company on critically lampooning public figures through theatre. This latest offering retells the divorce of Prince Charles and Princess Diana with a mixture of Shakespearean verse and 90s pop tunes. Some of the schemes of our modern day heroes and villains fit well with the Bard’s themes, but others feel as if they’re being forced into a mould for the sake of it. The portrayals of figures from the ‘90s are also patchy and unmemorable; the material calls for the grotesquely on-the-ball style of ‘Spitting Image’. However, a nostalgic satire that will divert you, if nothing else.

theSpace @ Venue 45, until 24 Aug (not 18), 10.05pm.
