Verb Garden – Radical Scotland (Fair Pley / The Famous Spiegeltent)
By Joe Abel | Published on Tuesday 13 August 2013
Informal and participative, these discussions, workshops and talks (along with sister show ‘The Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas’), are an ambitious forum, offering a vital shot in the arm for public discourse. I engaged in a discussion on the homogenisation of Scottish dialect on local radio, concurring with the flattening of signal and the transfer from analogue to uniform digital. The distinction between audience and panel is blurred or just dropped outright, with discussions being held in the round. This is particularly refreshing when it comes to the high calibre of academics and industry professionals involved, under increased pressure to engage with the public and justify funding. This event provides an obvious, elegant, economical solution: just get in a tent and talk.
The Famous Spiegeltent, until 25 Aug (not 10, 11, 23), 12.30pm.
