The Factory (New Zealand Season / Kila Kokonut)

By | Published on Sunday 31 August 2014

Come to ‘The Factory’ for good times, a heart-warming story, pop-funk songs and a fantastic chorus. Do not come for the script. Telling the story of Pacific Islanders who emigrated to New Zealand in the 1970s hoping to find American Dream-style prosperity, this musical boasts an utterly committed cast who are very enjoyable to watch. The choreography is punchy and dynamic, and Milly Grant as Losa stood out for her impassioned performance and sensational vocals. It is tragic that this show is so let down by bad writing. The script is a shambles of stilted, cliched language and the factory owner is written as a cartoonish Disney villain. If reworked, this would be an outstanding production.

Assembly Hall, until 25 Aug.
