Through The Looking Screen

When a Fringe comedy show has ‘light opera’ listed as its secondary genre, well, that’s gonna grab our attention. Clare Presland performs, Anne Chmelewsky directs and Elizabeth Challenger plays piano.
“A one-woman comedy-opera about social networking” says Anne Chmelewsky of the show she has conceived and composed. See what else she has to say with her Quick Quiz responses.

TW: Tell us about your 2012 show in no more than 60 words.
AC: ‘Through The Looking Screen’ is a one-woman comedy-opera about social networking. It follows the story of Annabel, a twenty seven year old Londoner, who is obsessed with a colleague of hers: Sebastian. She is convinced that the surest way to attract his attention is for her to study his online profiles, and refine hers accordingly.

TW: Tell us about another show or performer you’re looking forward to seeing this year.
AC: I’m excited about seeing Nick Mohammed’s ‘Mr Swallow’ (at Pleasance Courtyard). I saw one of the previews in London and loved it. I can’t wait to see how it’s evolved.

TW: How will you be preparing for the Fringe this year?
AC: Between our numerous rehearsals, I’m working hard on fine tuning details in the score, I’m still amending bits out of the libretto, trying to make it as tight a show as possible ahead of the Edinburgh previews, so that I can try things out with London audiences. I hope to have made my mind up on changes by the time we get to the Fringe!

TW: What are you most looking forward to about coming to the Fringe of the first time?
AC: Not only is this my first time at the Fringe, I’ve also never been to Scotland before. I’ve been told so much about the festival, and I’m just prepared to be totally overwhelmed when I get there! We’re all really looking forward to seeing the multitude of shows on offer, meeting new people, and most importantly to being inspired.

TW: If your show was an Olympic sport what would it be and why?
AC: If ‘Through The Looking Screen’ was an Olympic sport, it would probably be weight-lifting. There’s a reason there aren’t many one-woman operas about: the singing in the show requires an Olympian pair of lungs and Clare Presland’s performance of the piece is an all round tour de force.

Anne Chmelewsky’s show ‘Through The Looking Screen’ was performed at Underbelly Cowgate at Fringe 2012.
