A Grimm Tale (New Move Theatre Company)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

The stories you once knew are no more. ‘A Grimm Tale’ twisted familiar children’s fairytales, like ‘Cinderella’, or ‘Little Red Cap’, into something unrecognisable, ensuring the absence of a “happily ever after” for today’s miserable misanthropes. What detracted from the performance was that it appeared to function on a basis of general excess in terms of acting, singing and tone; it became especially exasperating when the frantic chants, continuous wailing and piercing screams of laughter carried on for what seemed like half the show, to make sure the audience fully comprehended just how wicked these children were. The choral music, however, was very refreshing, as was the use of physical theatricality, which combined, devised a creative and entertaining piece.

The Bongo Club, 8 – 12 Aug, 2.30pm (3.30pm), £5.00 – £6.00, fpp267.
