ED2011 2/5 Reviews ED2011 Theatre Reviews
Educate (Z Theatre Company)

An energetic performance isn’t enough to raise this musical out of the clutch of clichés. Claiming on its flyer to be “like ‘Glee’ but less cheesy”, it’s safely put me off watching ‘Glee’. The show is riddled with the archetypes we’ve come to expect from school-based ‘issue’ dramas. There’s the clever one who’s ignored by the girls, the new girl who’s attracted to the attractive musician one, the angry one who has a tough home life. It’s bizarre that, for a play supposedly out to attack stereotypes, this play is awash with them; there are no surprises to be had in this hour of generic drama. This wasn’t a wasted hour, but it isn’t a rich one.
theSpace at Niddry St, 8 – 18 Aug (not 14), 12.50pm (1.40pm), £3.00 – £5.00, fpp259.
