Fool’s Gold (Freshblood Theatre)
By Andrew Latimer | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
Some well-designed costumes and cute character relationships can’t save this unoriginal and bizarre coming-of-age performance. As Daisy attempts to find a new heart for her brother in order to save him from “the creature”, a journey through the forest offers up some interconnected children’s fairytales which try to demonstrate a poorly established metaphor for escaping childhood. Billed as a story on organ donation, there’s nothing to suggest this at all during the performance until certain random bombshells are dropped in on the plot and loosely tied together. The production feels like more of a first draft, and if rewritten and swapped around a little bit, there could actually be some essential and relevant territory explored.
