In Your Dreams (The Woolton Irregulars)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

“The course of true love never did run smooth”, but that’s not to say the theatrics should be jolting, erratic and strained. The idea for this Shakespearean re-imagining is clever – amateur dramatists playing amateur dramatists, themselves morphing into the well-known tale of unrequited love. It’s fittingly complicated. But Puck’s love potion is replaced with hallucinogenic drugs, provoking cheap laughs from cringeworthy, slapstick acting. Characters with barely two dimensions drag out scenes for awkward lengths of time, repeating their lines as if to fill the fifty minutes. Only Louise Gregson as the remorseful, glamorous Robyn gives the play any heart. It may have been “no more yielding but a dream”, but that dream could have had so much more substance.

Greenside, 22 – 27 Aug, 9.45pm (10.35pm), £5.00 – £8.00, fpp272.
