Musical Much Ado (Running Torch Theatre Company)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

The young actors of the Running Torch Theatre Company deliver Shakespeare here with clarity and expression; indeed, the vigour which they take to the Bard is impressive. There are other ‘Much Ados’ and Shakespeare adaptations at this Fringe, so it’s lucky that Running Torch’s unique selling point is its rock-musical edge. Initially promising, as the audience walks in to a lively rendition of ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’, it soon becomes clear that ‘a play with musical interludes’—and not ‘musical’—would be a more apt description. While the performances rarely falter, the quality of these musical interludes wavers between Guitar Hero performance and X Factor auditions. Nonetheless, an enjoyably inoffensive hour by some bright young actors.
