Terezin: Children Of The Holocaust (Actor’s Studio of Newburyport)
By Harriet Dodd | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
If you’re feeling sorry for yourself after a heavy night out, this might be just the reality check you need. Set in one cell block, the play explores the psychology of children hardened by their experience of Terezin concentration camp. The piece takes place during a strange episode of the Holocaust where Jewish musicians performed Vivaldi’s Requiem to fellow prisoners before deportation to Auschwitz. The dedication to historical accuracy is occasionally confusing, although the show has been used as an educational tool in schools to overcome prejudice and bullying, so its message – that art can overcome hatred – is emphatic. Despite the didactic tone, it’s a stunning feat – and if ‘Boy In Striped Pyjamas’ has you tearing up, ensure you come equipped with tissues.
