The Illiad, The Odyssey, And All Of Greek Mythology In 99 Minutes Or Less (American High School Theatre Festival)
By Kirsty MacSween | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
Cramming all of Greek mythology into an hour and an half, unsurprisingly, requires a lot of energy. The actors dashed around tirelessly, changing characters in seconds; I was exhausted by being a mere observer of this boundless activity. At first this show seemed irritatingly shrill, but as it went on, I was won over by sheer attrition and enjoyed the endless enthusiasm. Their constant pop-culture references were quite hit-and-miss, but there were some genuinely funny moments – Houses of Atreus and Thebes competing as football teams for best Greek tragedy was especially amusing. You would think a sprint through the entire Greek mythology in 99 minutes would fly by, but – much to this show’s discredit – it felt, at times, too long.
