Slap And Giggle – Retrial (Slap And Giggle / Sid Wick, James Bennison)
By Katie Cunningham | Published on Friday 24 August 2012
Two man musical comedy acts are becoming popular, and – as Slap and Giggle show – there’s nothing wrong with that. With half of the team on trial for several horrific crimes, and the other defending him, it’s filled with gentle, non-offensive dark humour. Parts of ‘Retrial’ are brilliant – sharp, creepy and perfect. Basically, the more horrible it is, the better it gets; jokes about murder and cruelty are never going to get old. When the set fell back on lighter and more conventional jokes it isn’t as sharp, but honestly, there were far fewer misses than hits. It’s a little off finding the right tone, but will; with audience participation, and great technological-problem based improvisation, it’s definitely worth seeing.
