Withered Hand (Withered Hand And Very Special Guests)

By | Published on Sunday 12 August 2012

The Queen’s Hall was packed to the rafters for this concert. And rightly so. Hosted by the effervescent comedian Josie Long, the show brought together three of the most accomplished indie folk acts of the last decade: the humble, piano-pounding Darren Hayman, formerly of John Peel’s dearly beloved band Hefner; Ballboy, whose tender love songs had couples swaying wistfully in the aisles; and Withered Hand, whose choirboy vocals and gradually swelling compositions reminded me of similarly brilliant groups Admiral Fallow, Broken Records, and Dry The River. By Withered Hand’s soaring encore, there were at least a dozen instruments playing in triumphant unison. But the loudest one of all was the deafening whistle from the joyful crowd.

The Queen’s Hall, 4 Aug, 8.00pm.
