Smokey Joe’s Cafe (Tempo)
By Ana-Claudia Magaña | Published on Friday 24 August 2012
Sit back, relax, and enjoy a fun-filled evening of song and dance at Smokey Joe’s Cafe. With music by Leiber and Stroller, the night features rock and roll classics of the 1950s and 60s that will have you dancing in your seat. The set design is lively and decorative, the costumes bright and colourful. The acting on stage, however – as minimal as it is – leans more toward overdone and cheesy. The show is more like a concert than a musical, yet this seems like the appropriate medium for this type of performance. Even if the names Leiber and Stroller don’t ring a bell, you’re guaranteed to spend a night with good musical entertainment at Smokey Joe’s Cafe.
The Edinburgh Academy, 20-25 Aug, times vary.
