The Mikado (Happy Go Lucky G&S)
By Hannah Sweetnam | Published on Friday 24 August 2012
The Mikado is a bizarre tale of love, marriage and treachery. The son of Japan’s Mikado runs away to escape an arranged marriage, and after falling in love with the betrothed Yum Yum, he lives out a series of confusing twists in the plot in the lead up to his execution, arranged in place of his own suicide. For the first fifteen minutes of the performance, it was challenging to comprehend the plot. However, as it thickened the tale became very humorous and ever more ridiculous, catching audience interest superbly. If you don’t enjoy opera, this is not for you. However, brilliantly acted with pitch-perfect vocals from the entire cast made it a highly professional and enjoyable performance.
