Zombie Prom (Latymer Theatre Company)
By Katie Cunningham | Published on Friday 24 August 2012
Don’t go to this because you want to see the living dead rampage around a school disco. And don’t go expecting a horror spoof. Taking zombies back to their consumerist-mocking roots, this is satire: namely, of 1950s America. None of that is meant as a criticism, as use of the original genre actually added a lot; this ended up being much smarter that it seemed to start out. Beyond that, it was a pretty great musical. All of the performances (especially the leads) were fantastic, and the lyrics were clever too – so it was a shame that the sound system sometimes made it hard to hear them. Big catchy songs, crowd dances: everything you could want.
Underbelly Cowgate, 20-26 Aug, 11.30am.
