A Woman Inside (Psychedelight)

‘A Woman Inside’ is the story of two women sharing a prison cell. Written by Sophie Besse, a drama therapist who worked in women’s prisons, the play explores how jail affects two very different women; Barbara and Sharon. Because the play focuses on only two characters, it hinges om the two performances. The actress who plays Sharon is captivating, but then she has an easier time of it; the actress who plays Barbara also does a good job, but her character is slightly annoying and unsympathetic. Because of the nature of the drama, it is essential that the audience sympathises, even relates to, the characters on some level. Unfortunately Barbara is slightly irritating, which makes it difficult to care about how she adapts to prison life.
