Teach Me (Strange Town Theatre Company)

By | Published on Friday 24 August 2012

You never forget your first time. Young company Strange Town’s surprisingly sweet hearted sex comedy is a two hander with a straight to business set up: an eighteen year old longs to lose his virginity to an experienced older woman. Performers Amy Drummond and Andy Peppiette slip into their roles expertly, making their familiar characters unexpectedly deep and likeable. Milking as many big laughs from body language and awkward pauses as from the tight, insightful dialogue, they slide easily from outright comedy to touching poignancy. Content with quietly exposing these characters’ vulnerabilities and mutual neediness, the script succeeds in neatly skewering the uncertainties of two generations. Anything but an awkward fumble, this is a mature and assured pleasure.

Hill Street Theatre, 2-26 Aug (not 13, 20), 2.30pm.
